Join MOYE for an evening of World Beat/AfroBeat. Bring your dancing shoes and get ready to dance! Nigeria’s legendary guitar master and singer Adesoji “Soji” Odukogbe was, among other things, the lead guitarist for the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s groundbreaking Afrobeat band. Odukogbe draws on an extensive background in Nigerian Afrobeat, highlife, and spiritual music, bringing a unique sensibility to his highlife guitar interpretations.
Nigeria: Soji Odukogbe born in Lagos, Nigeria, began his music career at age 24 performing internationally as lead guitarist with the late great Fela Anikulapo Kuti, & Egypt 80. Soji went on a 5 year tour of Europe with Fela Kuti and Egypt 80. Soji has also recorded and performed with such artists as Femi Kuti, Babatunde Olatunji, Orlando Julius Ekemode.
Nigeria: Master Drummer, Rasaki Aladokun with over 25 years experience performed with King Sunny Ade. He was a valued member of King Sunny Ade’s band for over twenty years. During that period Rasaki participated in the recording and release of over 50 albums and CDs. He has been a featured artist in the recordings of many notable musicians, among them, O.J. Ekemode, Stevie Wonder, and Babatunde Olatunji.
Ghana: Pope Flyne, Master Percussionist/Dance Instructor/Choreographer also played with Sweet Talk.
Jeremy Sherman, bass: An origins of life research by day, and a reliable and hearty jazz, funk, world bassist/vocalist by night, he has gigged over 700 times throughout the Bay Area with various combos.
Bay Area: (Guest Artist) Justin Phipps is a bay area native who has been performing and teaching music locally for the past 25 years. He is currently launching Redtone Records, an East Palo Alto-based record label with a mission to promote voices of justice and healing while preserving the spirit and sound of “roots” and traditional music. Spending years exclusively as a blues guitarist and harmonica player, Justin became a musical apprentice to both Soji and Babá Ken Okulolo and has been performing Afrobeat, Highlife and Soukous with them for the last decade.
