Justin Kawika Young, Melissa Polinar, Lea Love, Melvin Gutierrez – Island Acoustic Sessions

Justin Kawika Young

Justin Kawika Young is an American singer on the contemporary Hawaiian music scene. Young is engaged to and touring with singer Colbie Caillat, as lead guitarist and backup singer.

Young released his first album when he was a 17-year-old high school senior and he hasn’t stopped making music. Now 37, Young has a new album set to drop that showcases what he describes as his “R&B-influenced singer/songwriter” sound.

Young draws upon eclectic musical influences. In addition to Hawaiian artists John Cruz, Gabby Pahinui and Fiji, he has also been influenced by reggae superstars Bob Marley and Gregory Isaacs as well as by R&B artists including Brian McKnight, Boyz II Men, Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway.

Melissa Polinar

Throughout her career, Polinar has gained the respect and recognition of several recognizable artists for her unique soulful vocals, heart-bearing lyrical content, and passionate musicianship

Listeners are drawn to Polinar’s cover of Sting’s “Fragile” featuring India.Arie on the project. The two singers draw out a soul from one another that is impressive even by their vocal standards. “Fragile” is just the song for Polinar and her Grammy-winning collaborator to fully deliver the kind of swagger that they can draw out of one another. Given that Polinar has received praise for her music from India.Arie for the past several years, it also marks a time for the two longtime fans of each other’s art to respectfully make art together.
