Creative Jazz. Rare Musicianship. Intimate Listening.
Join us for Jazz at the Marquee, the new Thursday Night Concert Series at the Empress Marquee Club, with an extraordinary evening of creative, soulful, and adventurous jazz led by one of the most original instrumental voices in modern improvised music: Paul Hanson.
Hanson is internationally recognized as a groundbreaking jazz bassoonist who has taken the instrument far beyond the classical stage and into jazz, funk, fusion, world music, and fearless improvisation. A San Francisco Conservatory-trained musician, he has performed and recorded with artists including Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Wayne Shorter, Peter Erskine, Charlie Hunter, Billy Childs, Billy Higgins, Brian Blade, Randy Brecker, Jon Batiste, Medeski Martin & Wood, Ray Charles, and Bob Weir’s RatDog.
Featured Quartet
Paul Hanson — bassoon
David Michel Ruddy — piano
John Wiitala — bass
Erik von Buchau — drums
Together, they will create an evening that is lyrical, swinging, exploratory, and full of surprise. Expect beautiful melodies, deep grooves, inventive improvisation, and the rare opportunity to hear the bassoon as a powerful front-line jazz voice in an intimate club setting.
Come early for dinner. Stay for a bold night of live jazz.
The music can move from chamber-like delicacy to hard-driving rhythm, from modern jazz color to bluesy warmth, from playful conversation to fearless improvisation. With piano, bass, drums, and Hanson’s remarkable bassoon voice at the center, the night promises something fresh, personal, and deeply alive.
Order dinner, enjoy a craft cocktail or cold drink, and settle into the close-up atmosphere of the Empress Marquee Club. This is live jazz the way it should be heard: warm, immediate, and just steps from the musicians.
