Back by popular demand! TANGO DEL CIELO (Tango of Heaven) returns to the Empress Theatre to celebrate 2020 with a tribute to the Roaring 1920’s and the Golden Age of Hollywood! With standing ovations nationwide, TANGO DEL CIELO is a national touring multimedia show and was recently the featured show at the World Tango Festival & Accordion Festival in Victoria, Canada. Come see what all the excitement is about! TANGO DEL CIELO leads you through the tight turns, dips and smoky cafes of Argentina, the bull fights of Spain, and the jungles of South America featuring Harp, Strings, Percussion, Tango & Flamenco dance performing the exotic music of Piazzolla, De Falla, Albeniz and other Argentine and Spanish masters as well as contemporary nuevo tango and nostalgic Latin favorites. The show takes you back in time to the Silent Films and the Golden Age of Hollywood to when tango was first popularized in the United States. Ensemble includes award winning harpist Anna Maria Mendieta (Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera), violinist Matthew Szemela (Berkeley Symphony, San Jose Opera), cellist Joseph Hébert (Oakland Symphony, Skywalker Symphony), and Seattle percussionist Antonio Gómez (Trio Guadalevín, the Eurasia Consort). The dancers are two-time national Argentine Tango champion Marcelo Molina from Buenos Aires; flamenco dancer Suzanne Mendieta, who was a featured dancer at the World EXPO in Seville, Spain; and special guests, Maxi Copello and Raquel Makow from Buenos Aires, who are featured dancers for many of the most famous tango movies and touring shows around the world. Enjoy an exciting afternoon of music, dance, film, and theatrical spectacle at the magnificent Empress Theatre in Vallejo with an international cast of award winning musicians and dancers, and musical arrangements by Grammy award winning composers. The program is full of delightful surprises and entertaining for all ages!
